How to recycle styrophone cups

Tara Donovan has transformed huge volumes of everyday items into captivating sculptures. I was amazed to discover that her “Untitled 2003” was all made of styrophone cups. I want to make this. All I need is glue and electricity.

Dachshunds!

I always wanted a dachshund, but I changed my mind when I found out that they have a lot of health complications. Most obvious, Doxies are the most susceptible to back problems out of all dog breeds. I guess a wraparound dachshund onesie will do. They come in 5 different colors. Check them out here.

Talking about dachshunds, I found this posting on Animalswithcasts. Aww, she can’t even look at the camera.

This is a pic of my dog Bailey.  She managed to break her tail in a door - it was literally at a right angle.  The kink in her tail has never quite gone away, but at least she could still wag it.  :)Tom

Turn It Loose: B-Boy Documentary

We can’t wait until the documentary Turn It Loose comes out in theaters. It’s suppose to be released by the end of this year. View the trailer and synopsis below.

Synopsis:

In September 2007, 16 of the world’s best b-boys battle one on one in a disused power station in the heart of Soweto, South Africa, to determine who will be the next world champion. ‘Turn it Loose’ is a film about this competition. Through the eyes of six competitors we leave behind any preconceived notions of what breakdance used to represent, and as the film digs deeper into their lives, we discover an extraordinary form of non-contact combat that has evolved over 30 years to become a truly 21st century global phenomenon, stretching the limits of physical capability and pushing dance itself to astonishing new heights.

From very different corners of the planet, the six characters that lead us through the competition all have their own stories to tell. From the professional to the rookie, we travel from Senegal to Japan, and discover a generation united in a physical language that crosses cultures. Drawn together by a dream to be the best, what quickly becomes clear is that these b-boys are a unique breed of athletes exceptionally skilled in a craft with no formal training that combines martial arts, gymnastics and dance. For this is still a street culture, born out of poverty and hardship and as we begin to understand the drive and determination that has pushed our characters to the very top of their game, we become absorbed and involved in their journey through the competition.

It is the rookie who leads the audience into the film and into their world. Ben-J is from the ghettos of Dakar, Senegal and is competing in his first international competition. Through Ben-J we begin to understand the pressure competing in this event entails as he tries to cope with the expectations of every b-boy back in Senegal. Lilou, a French-Algerian Red Bull BC One Champion from 2005, is fighting his own war. Whilst fasting for Ramadan he is attempting to restore his reputation in Soweto after losing in the first round in 2006. Then there is Roxrite, who is definitely American, despite the hardships he has endured living there since leaving Mexico when he was eight.

Taisuke, from Japan, is our youngest competitor at 17. Against his parents’ wishes, he left home in Nagasaki aged 16 to follow his dream of being the ultimate b-boy in Tokyo. Meanwhile, the current ultimate b-boy, the 2006 Red Bull BC One champion, a Korean named Hong 10, is struggling to cope with the expectation of being the title-holder. This is unlike Ronnie, a professional b-boy from Las Vegas who has a very definite purpose for being there- to honour the loss of his dead brother, and avenge losing in last year’s final …

Turn It Loose leads us all the way through the end of the competition and in the process combines the human drama with the visual intensity of the dance itself. For it is the dance that makes these characters truly exceptional, and within the framework of the competition, we weave their stories together, whilst they dazzle us with their skill, musicality and physical expertise.
